The magnetic surface of the pot magnet is exposed to only one side of the steel pot.
The North Pole of the pot magnet is at the center of the magnet and the South Pole is at the outer edge.
When a magnet is attached to a ferromagnetic material, the pole configuration produces a closed circuit that provides a stronger holding force. A closed circuit is where the magnetic field is confined within the ferromagnetic material when it is attached to a magnet.
This type of magnetization does result in a strong magnetic field, but it doesn't extend very far because the lines are only parallel to the magnet. As a result, the pot magnet attracts ferromagnetic materials only when it is very close to the magnetic surface.
The steel shell on the pot magnet
The steel shell is the outer shell of the magnet that protects it from cracking or breaking in contact with a hard surface.
The steel pot provides strength to the magnet, which would otherwise be very fragile, and allows threaded holes and studs to be inserted.
The steel shell helps the magnetic field become 32 times stronger than other magnets by focusing it on a magnetic surface. This means it can support large objects, such as supermarket signs, from the ceiling without any additional support.
Some types of pot magnets can also be encased in brass or plastic. Brass and plastic provide a non-ferromagnetic shell for the magnet, which enhances the magnetic field when the tank magnet is not equipped with a gasket. This only happens with pot magnets in the United States, as brass or plastic cases are not currently available in this country.

A gasket acts as a barrier between the magnet and the steel shell to avoid any demagnetization effects that the steel might have on the magnet.
The gaskets in the pot magnets can be made of brass or plastic.
Rubber caps and rubber coatings on can magnets
Pot magnets can have a rubber coating on top of their steel casing, which allows them to be used on surfaces that users do not want the magnets to scratch, such as car roofs.
If the pot magnet does not have a rubber coating, there is an option to purchase a rubber cap that is easy to press onto the magnet and easy to remove.
The rubber provides friction for the pot magnet, allowing the magnet to clamp onto a vertical surface so it can't slip off easily. However, a rubber cap or coating on a can magnet creates an air gap, which means the magnet is less able to hold.
