What Rope Should You Use ?

There are several key factors to consider when choosing a rope for magnet fishing:

1. Breaking strength of the rope: This is one of the most important factors. The breaking strength of the rope must be higher than the pull of the magnet to prevent the rope from breaking and losing the magnet. For example, if the breaking strength of the rope is 300 kilograms and the pull of the magnet is 200 kilograms, this combination is appropriate.

2. Thickness of rope: The thickness of the rope should match the strength of the magnet. Stronger magnets require thicker ropes to minimize the compression of the rope on the hands when lifting heavy objects. For small magnets, a thickness of 6 millimeters may be sufficient, but for magnets 200 kilograms or heavier, a rope 8 millimeters or thicker will be more comfortable.

3. Material of the rope: The choice of material is also very important. Materials like black spur should be avoided. These materials look like climbing ropes but are spongy and elastic to the touch and are not suitable for use. The following materials are recommended:
- Twisted polypropylene rope: Although inexpensive and strong, it may cause discomfort to the hands when lifting heavy objects.
- Para cord: Cheap and very strong, but thin. This is not a problem if the magnets are small. Para cord is available in different thicknesses for different sized magnets.
- Climbing rope: very strong and reliable, but more expensive. Due to its thickness, it is suitable for use when lifting heavy objects.
- Marine ropes: designed for use in the water and usually very strong.

4. Personal experience: the author has used parachute cord in the past, and although it is thin, by doubling it up it improves comfort when using it.

When choosing a rope you need to consider its breaking strength, thickness, material and suitability for use in water. Depending on the size of the magnet and the intended conditions of use, different types of rope can be selected to achieve the best results.
