Barium ferrite, chemically known as BaFe12O19, is a hard ferrite and a ceramic magnet material known for its remarkable magnetic properties.
Properties
- Chemical Composition: Barium ferrite consists of barium ions (Ba²⁺) and iron ions (Fe³⁺), with a formula of BaFe12O19. This compound exhibits ferrimagnetic behavior due to the coupling of Fe³⁺ ions within its crystal structure.
- Magnetic Characteristics: It has a high coercivity, making it suitable for applications requiring permanent magnets. The net magnetic moment of one unit cell is approximately 40 μB (Bohr magnetons) due to its unique crystal structure.
Barium ferrite has good chemical stability, is not easily corroded by common substances such as water and organic solvents, and is relatively stable in humid environments, so it can be used for a long time in relatively harsh chemical environments.
Physical properties
Magnetic properties: Barium ferrite is a ferrimagnetic material with high coercivity and remanence. It can retain strong magnetism after the external magnetic field disappears, so it can be used as a permanent magnet material.
Hardness: It has high hardness and good wear resistance, which makes it advantageous in some applications that need to withstand mechanical wear, such as when manufacturing magnetic recording media, it can ensure the stability of the media during long-term use.
Density: Its density is about, which is relatively high, which to some extent affects its use in some applications with strict weight requirements, but in some fixed positions or equipment that is not very sensitive to weight, its advantages of high magnetism and stability are more prominent.
Color: It is usually a brown powder. In some molded products, the color may vary slightly due to different preparation processes and additives.
Advantages
- Corrosion Resistance: Barium ferrite is resistant to moisture and oxidation, contributing to its longevity and reliability in various environments.
- Thermal Stability: It maintains its magnetic properties at elevated temperatures, with a Curie temperature around 450°C (842°F), which allows it to function effectively in demanding conditions.
